Surface. Intersection. Node.

The next step in the advancement of my concept introduces a node condition in which the skin grows out of a single point marking a programmatic landmark to show hierarchy and importance. The skin will integrate and accentuate program while maintaining the conceptual goal of tying the super structure to the ground by using an interweaving surface as the vehicle of connection. The node creates a sense of urgency in the apparatus bay by making it the center of the curvilinear surface, which will seek to formally combine the pressing speed of a firefighter rushing to his truck with the building’s need to connect and anchor with the ground in the midst of the attempts to move.

Intersections

My initial concept is to create a growing, weaving, and intersecting syntactical form which will artificially tie the superstructure into the site by using surface as a vehicle of connection. The weaving forms will also allow for a lizard-like bio-mimetic skin that can be applied to sustainable functions such as water cachement.

The juxtaposition of super structure and ground as it is bridged by artificial surface articulation can draw from organic patterns as seen in plant cell structure as well as the pattern of man-made velcro hooking onto a surface. Both instances reference the paradox of the artificial connection between man made structure and land form in the use of physical anchoring and sustainable strategies

Lecture | REBAR Group

There was an interesting lecture at the atrium in building 7 this Wednesday by art/ design/ activism collaborative REBAR Group. Shown here is Blaine Merker discussing an event they created called "Nappening" which was designed to activate a privately owned public space in downtown San Francisco.
